The 2024 WVLS Summer Math Adventure Grant is a pilot project and opportunity for WVLS libraries to offer or enhance math-based activities throughout the summer.
Annually, the Wisconsin Mathematics Council creates a summer math program for public libraries to offer to their patrons. Three age-targeted adventures are available- preschool, kindergarten through 2nd grade, and 3rd through 5th grade.
Libraries that receive a WVLS Summer Math Adventure Grant will receive $500 to offer the Wisconsin Mathematics Council’s Summer Math Adventure program to youth in their communities. The grant may be used to defray expenses that participating libraries incur when implementing this new program.
Why is WVLS focusing on this program?
“Early math skills are just as crucial as early literacy skills in forecasting academic success,” said Kristie Hauer, WVLS Public Services Consultant. “Math skills help improve concentration, memory, problem-solving, fine motor skills, critical thinking, creativity, and foster a love for learning. Math concepts are part of our daily lives, including shapes, measurements, sorting, comparisons, patterns, and counting.”
Kristie said the program is an ideal way to keep children engaged with math concepts during the summer months. The program enables children to maintain and practice their skills even when school is not in session.
“The Wisconsin Mathematics Council has compiled activities and instructions for the program into digital booklets, making it easy for libraries to implement the program. When offering the program, the Wisconsin Mathematics Council requests host libraries to provide a completion award and bonus award. WVLS is offering member libraries this grant to minimize financial barriers, and to make implementation more attainable,” she said.
