NOTE: Free training sessions are available on the following topics to library personnel and/or trustees who are serving libraries (of all types) in the seven county WVLS area.
If you are interested in a one-on-one or small group tutorial session, CONTACT THE WVLS OFFICE AND ASK FOR HELP. WVLS staff members are available to talk with you on the phone, send you appropriate materials, or come to your library to help you solve your problems. You can schedule these sessions at your convenience. There is no charge to you/your library.

Are you new at the budget process? Do you have questions about what accounts you should use and/or what expenditures should be assigned to particular accounts? How about the format youre using is it understand-able to your library and municipal boards?

Library trustees are among the most important resources a library has. Training is available to help them understand their duties and responsibilities as well as how those duties compare with those of the library director. Training sessions can be set up on a local, county, and/or system-wide basis. WVLS staff will also respond to questions from individual trustees.

It is important for your library to operate within the applicable state and federal laws. The law assigns very specific roles and responsibilities to libraries. library systems, and their trustees. If not operating in compliance with these laws, a library could risk loss of a number of services and trustees could even be sued. Make sure your trustees know and function within the proper legal context.

WVLS staff members are available to help you prepare grant proposals. We will not write the grant for you but you can ask us to critique your grant, make suggestions for clarity, provide useful demographic information, etc. A call to any WVLS staff member will put you in contact with the appropriate staff member. WVLS subsidizes courier service for all member public libraries through contracts with two different delivery providers. Public libraries are encouraged to offer courier service to other types of libraries in their communities using the public library site as the delivery/pick-up point. Are you making the best use of the WVLS courier services?

WVLS provides consultant services to encourage and assist area library personnel to extend special needs programs/services for adult literacy, family literacy, American Indians, ADA, the blind and visually impaired, the deaf and hard of hearing, the developmentally disabled, the homebound, the economically disadvantaged, the elderly, the institutionalized elderly, those in jails and other correctional facilities, the mentally ill, non-English speakers, Southeast Asians, state institutions and the unemployed.

Wisconsin law requires that directors of public libraries achieve and maintain certification at prescribed levels. Taking part in staff-led tutorial sessions or using the training kits on your own can provide CEUs to help maintain your certification.
